Meadows City Tennis Club is entering two women's teams in East of Scotland competitive Doubles leagues this year and we are looking for new talent!
Our Team 1 will be in division 4 and Team 2 starting out in division 8 so we are looking for a range of standards.
Matches will take place over 10 weeks from mid April to June at the Meadows and clubs in and around Edinburgh area,
We are also running coached team tryout sessions on Sunday which is a chance to meet other players.
Looking for Women's DoublesTeam Players
The club season went out with a bang with a final doubles tournament in late October sunshine - we filled 7 courts and used our usual rotating format to mean everyone gets to play with everyone (in theory).
The following Thursday was the club's big end of season night out - thanks to Andi for organising and taking us to the very pleasant Hewatts's restaurant on Causewayside and the Cask and Barrell afterwards. As always engraved club trophies were presented - we pretty much took up the whole restaurant but the one other table of 4 were very understanding of the short 5 minute speech/disturbance to their dining!
As Xmas approached Andi revived her new idea of a December Miulled wine event in the club house following on from a club social session.
Our annual end of season doubles tournament took place on the second Saturday of September in glorious late summer weather this year - what better place to win a club trophy than the beautiful setting of the Meadows tennis courts!
The women's event saw two new names on the trophy for 2016 with a winning partnership of Jenny Anderson and Lilian Lee, who defeated Ana Heyn and FIona Scott in the final (all East of Scotland League players).
Congratulations in the men's event to last year's winners Juan Bueren and Kevin Stott who defended their title against Clive Minshull and Jackson Pauls (all of whom play in our mens 1st team in East of Scotland leagues ).
Big thanks to everyone who participated and made it a fun day at our fantastic club!
Saturday 3 August saw our annual women's and men's singles tournamnet - thanks to everyone who played and helped in great weather and for once going against the forecast for rain. Unlike most club we run our club championships as a round robin event on a single day meaning everyone gets to play a good bit of tennis against a variety of opponents and makes it a sociable event too!
This year saw a new women's winner - Emily Tupper who was one of the club's earliest junior members - defeating the 2013 winner Andi Hermann in the final.
The men's trophy was taken this year by Clive Minshull who has won on two previous occasions (2011 and 2014). Jackson Pauls, who went out to Clive in the semi this year, remains the club member to have won the most times (5 in all!)
Doubles tournaments next weekend!
Clive and Emily - Singles Champions 2016. Well Done! :) Clive and Emily with finalists Kevin and Andi!
Sunday 18 October say an end of summer season social doubles tournament in ideal autumnal weather with Meadows looking beauiful as the trees start to turn red and gold!
Thanks to everyone who entered (and Andi and Phil for helping to run the event).
Well done to Cat W who won the women's prize; and Steve Gareth who tied on the men's side. Just for a change (!) we headed to the Greenmantle pub after to see Scotland losing to Australia in the final minute in the Rugby World Cup!
This does not mean the MCTC tennis season is over - we will play right through the winter as weather permits and under floodlights on Monday eveings 6-8.
Congratulations to our 2015 Meadows City Tennis Club singles and doubles winners:
Singles: Emma O'Sullivan (runner up Panita Suavansri)
Mens Singles: Jackson Pauls (runner up: Adam Bleakley)
Women's Doubles: Emma O'Sullivan/Panita Suavansri (runners up: Christelle Robert/Ana Heyn)
Men's Doubles: Kevin Stott/Juan Bueren (runners up: Gareth Beedham/Jackson Pauls)
The doubles weekend saw glorious weather and new names all round for the trophies plus a vistit to the Pear Tree beer garden afterwards. In the women's singles Emma is also a new name on the trophy while Jackson (now a record 5 times winner) regained his title from Clive Minshull (who was unable to play this year).
Thanks to everyone who participated and also helped run the event on the day - Christelle for running the women's events and Breck, Jackson and Aaron for helping with scoring in men's events!
On Sunday 2 August we held a charity doubles tournament to raise funds for Save The Children and as a memorial event for a deceased member of the club. Edinburgh Leisure generously donated the court time and local businesses Victor Hugo Delicatessen, Wood Winter Wine and Sainsburys Causewayside donated raffle prizes, along with PB Sportswear our club clothing supplier. In total from donations from members and the raffle we have raised £400 - many thanks to all who attended and contributed to the success of the event.
Our usual social doubles tournament took place on Saturday 16 May with a great turn out and east coast winds playing a big part! Followed by the traditional visit to Greenamntle pub afterwards! Thanks to all who participated - a good mix of old and new members and well done to Adam Leel (back row left) and Andi (front row second from left) as the winners!
We have a range of club clothing which members can order all with the club logo on them; cotton or "performance" items available.
